Pearl Forum Review
Pearl is a well known name when it comes to drum sets. Being in this industry for more than 60 years, I think pearl drums deserves the credibility it gets. Pearl has an entire line of drums from entry level to the most advanced.
The Pearl Forum, is their entry level drum set designed for new drummers who will be giving drumming a shot for the first time most likely. Since the Pearl Forum is supposed to be their entry level product, it doesn’t have all the shiny toys you would get in a more expensive and advanced drum set but its enough for some one who is just starting out and just needs to get some action going.
Here is what you get with the pearl forum drum set out of the box;
- 22×18 bass drum
- 12×9 & 13×10 mounted toms
- 16×16 floor tom
- 14×5.5 wood snare drum
- 14″ hi-hats
- 18″ Pearl Crash/Ride cymbal
The Pearl Forum Review
Considering there are many entry level drum sets on the market, lets take a closer look at whats good and whats not about the forum to help you decide what’s in your best interest.
The forum gives you some basic drum heads with your purchase. They aren’t top of the line but if you’re an absolute beginner, then its better you stick with them until you grown on your drum sets and have some experience under your belt. At that point, i’d recommend you go with something nicer like the Remo heads. That will give you very good sound.
The shells on Pearl Forum are made from Poplar. While not being as good as birch and some other good woods, it still gives a pretty good sound. Plus, since there is the exclusive scarf joint construction by Pearl, that helps towards sound as well. The ISS tom mounts that you get with your set let you place them anywhere you’re comfortable but you can’t expect pin point precision on an entry level set like the forum. Not with pearl nor any other company.
The hardware with this set is decent enough and sturdy. Durable enough to last quite some time, they more than sufficient for any new player as well. With the Pearl Forum, you’ll get a hi hat stand, throne, 2 boom cymbal stands and drum pedal.
Looks?
The Forum is available in 5 colors/finishes. While Neither of them are rocking HOT they’re enough to pass for a more than decent drum set. here are some pictures to help you visualize.
Now for the things that really matter
An entry level drum set isn’t about fancy toys. Its about giving you enough to be able to bring out the creative musician inside you. Sound is definitely the department that matters the most. Even though an entry set won’t give you mind blowing, epic sound…A decent distinguishable sound is certainly expected. The Pearl Forum does deliver on this. When compared to other sets in this price range, the forum definitely has a fuller sound and the drums have a really nice ring to it.
The rack and the floor toms are made with cheap wood as is expecting. Even so, the sound they produce is surprisingly deep and loud. Again, not the best but certainly worth what you pay for. Same goes for the Bass drum. Not the best but certainly deep and penetrating enough to bring life to a performance by a new and budding artist.
The snare though isn’t that good and I’v noticed same is the complaint with all other forum users across the board. Sure it is good enough for you to start out on but you’ll want to get a better one once you’ve had some practice.
Cymbals are another items you’ll want to replace once you have had the chance to play on your drum sets and have some good music flowing from you. Again, you don’t need to get anything thing fancy at this point if you’re just starting out. The cymbals you get with your Pearl Forum will do just fine for now.
So whats the final word??
Well, like I mentioned many times in this review… The pearl forum isn’t the best drum set you’ll find on the market. BUT, for the price you’re going to pay for this, its better than any other set in this price range. Its an entry level set so the focus here is not to give you the best of everything and make it a $5000 kit. Rather, the focus here is to give you enough to get started using a decent set with decent equipment and a sound that is good enough to bring out the artist while staying affordable…
To someone who is buying a drum set for the first time, I definitely recommend the Pearl Forum Series.
For the price ($699) you pay, the Pearl Forum is certainly worth going for. I did some digging to find out the best place to buy the pearl forum series online and I couldn’t find any place with better deals than what were available on Amazon. There are 3 vendors selling it there and between them, they have all the colors available. All three are also available with super saver shipping plus one you can buy used sets too. You can follow this link to see all 3 vendors and their prices on Amazon.
